footnotes =Saint-Lambert is a Canadian city on the south shore of the
St. Lawrence River , across fromMontreal . From January 1, 2002, to January 1, 2006, it was amalgamated into the city ofLongueuil .History
Saint-Lambert was established in the 17th century when André Marsil and André Achim became the first residents. (Today André Marsil's house on present-day Riverside Drive has been converted into a
textile museum called the "Marsil Museum".) It was named for the hunter Lambert Raphaël Closse. Along with the railroad in 1850 and the Victoria Bridge linking the south shore to the island of Montreal, came a quick growth in Saint-Lambert's population and housing development.During
World War I andWorld War II , Saint-Lambert had one of the highest military enlistment rates in Canada. The small city lost a total of 132 soldiers in both wars. [ [http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=5427793f-e76e-4ccd-868f-59b2fe9162e9&k=52453 Montreal Gazette Article] ] This number was a significant portion of the young people at the time.In the 1950s, the development of Saint-Lambert was enhanced with the building of the St. Lambert Locks in the
St. Lawrence Seaway , to bypass the smallerLachine Canal , and this became the most easterly lock in the Seaway. Suburban growth from Montreal in this period also affected Saint-Lambert, as well as many of the older communities on the "South Shore". The Saint-Lambert development is also a result of the merger between Saint-Lambert andPréville in 1969.According to Statistics Canada, Saint-Lambert has grown from its first two residents to a population of 21,599 in 2006.
Amalgamation and de-amalgamation
On
January 1 ,2002 , municipal reorganization merged Saint-Lambert with LeMoyne to form a borough in the newLongueuil mega-city. There was a strong "de-merger" movement and a referendum was won onJune 20 ,2004 , to re-establish the former city. The city was officially "re-born" onJanuary 1 ,2006 , while onJanuary 7 ,2006 , the Saint-Lambert flag was hoisted in front of city hall and the mayor, councillors and city manager took their oath of office.Geography
St-Lambert is underlain by
Ordovician -erablack shale . This bedrock is covered by deep clay drift over most of the town.Soil s were poorly drained in their natural state; as such, they would have been classified asgleysol s. Drainage and excavation have been used to adapt the soil for housing construction. The most common
tree s in St-Lambert are those species which tolerate poor drainage. These includepoplar s,willow s,red maple ,silver maple andgreen ash . TheAmerican elm was formerly abundant but its population has been severely reduced byDutch elm disease . Non-native species are commonly represented byNorway maple ,silver birch ,English oak ,blue spruce , common horsechestnut andhoney locust . Rare exotics which benefit from St-Lambert's favorable microclimate includeJapanese maple and tulip tree. Most trees in St-Lambert show some evidence of damage from an ice storm in January 1998 and a severe thunderstorm in June 2008.Climate
The climate of St-Lambert is characterized by abundant precipitation and one of the longest, warmest growing seasons in Quebec. As in other parts of Greater Montreal, lengthy spells of hot humid weather are common in summer.
Thunderstorm s are frequent and occasionally cause widespread damage. Heavysnow is usual in winter and several damagingice storm s have occurred over the town's history.Government
The current mayor of the City of Saint-Lambert is
Sean Finn . There are eight councillors.
