The Military of Australia, officially known as the Australian Defence Force (ADF) since 1976, consists of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The Australian Department of Defence administers the Australian Defence Organisation (ADO) which consists of the ADF and the civilian personnel supporting the ADF. Approximately 53,000 men and women serve in the ADF with another 21,600 serving in the three reserve components.

The ADF is constituted under the Executive Government sections of the Australian Constitution, Section 68, that says, "The command in chief of the naval and military forces of the Commonwealth is vested in the Governor-General as the Queen's representative." In practice, the control of the ADF is, politically, vested in the Minister for Defence and several subordinate ministers. The Minister acts on most matters alone, however, important matters are considered by the National Security Committee of Cabinet. The Minister then advises the Governor-General who acts as advised in the normal form of executive government. The current Chief of the Australian Defence Force is Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston.

The Military history of Australia covers a period of around 200 years starting with the colonisation of Australia by the British in 1788. Australians have fought in nearly every major war of the 20th Century including the Second Boer War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War as well as numerous UN peace-keeping missions.

Savo Island.jpg

The Battle of Savo Island, also known as the First Battle of Savo Island and, in Japanese sources, as the First Battle of the Solomon Sea, took place August 89, 1942, and was a naval battle of the Pacific Campaign of World War II, between the Imperial Japanese Navy and Allied naval forces. The battle was the first major naval engagement during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands campaign and a victory for Japan. Australia contributed two heavy cruiser to the battle, HMAS Australia and Canberra, navy Coastwatchers and a small number of Air Force aircraft. On August 9 Canberra was struck by two torpedoes and over 20 salvoes of 8 inch shellfire, Canberra was later scuttled by United States Navy destroyers.

Simpson and the donkey.jpg

John Simpson Kirkpatrick (6 July 189219 May 1915), also known as Jack Simpson, was a stretcher bearer with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli during World War I. He landed at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915 and, on that first night, took a donkey and began carrying wounded from the battle line to the beach for evacuation. He continued this work for three and a half weeks, many times under direct fire, until he was killed. Today, Simpson and his Donkey are an Anzac legend. Kirkpatrick is probably the best known soldier of the First Australian Imperial Force.

HMAS Tobruk in 2008

The second HMAS Tobruk is a Landing Ship Heavy (LSH) of the Royal Australian Navy, based on the design of the "Sir" class of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Tobruk was the first purpose built amphibious vessel in the RAN, and is designed as a multi-purpose, ro-ro heavy lift and transport vessel - the ship can be loaded via ramps at both the bow and stern, and can be purposely beached. Tobruk can carry up to eighteen Leopard 1 MBTs and 40 APCs and has a standard capacity of 300 troops, with an overload capacity of 520. Tobruk has been actively deployed to a number of combat zones, including Somalia in 1991.

A F-111C in 2006

The F-111C is a version of the United States' F-111 tactical strike aircraft developed specifically for Australia. The F-111C combines F-111A/E avionics with the long-span wings and heavier landing gear originally designed for the F-111B. Twenty-four F-111Cs were originally ordered in 1963 and entered service in 1973. Four aircraft were modified to RF-111C reconnaissance configuration, while retaining their strike capability. An additional four ex-USAF F-111As were refitted to F-111Cs and delivered to Australia as attrition replacements. The F-111Cs have been continuously upgraded and are scheduled to remain in service until 2010.
