Protected areas of South Africa include any geographical area protected for a specific use.
Most protected areas are intended for the conservation of flora and fauna, including peace parks, national parks, and national botanical gardens. South Africa's national parks are maintained by South African National Parks (SANParks).[1] A number of national parks have become Peace parks and changed their names. Private Parks are starting to have a huge impact on the conservation scene.
Areas may also be protected for their value and importance as historical, cultural heritage or scientific sites. More information on these can be found in the list of heritage sites in South Africa.
Special Nature Reserves
Peace Parks
- Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park includes the Richtersveld National Park (Northern Cape) and Ai-Ais Hot Springs, including the Fish River Canyon Park (Namibia)
- Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park (see also:Kruger National Park) also includes parks in Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
- Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park includes the Kalahari Gemsbok Park (Northern Cape) and Gemsbok National Park and Mabuasehube Game Reserve (Botswana)
- Greater Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area, is a park to be relised in the future when some of the parks below have shown some more improvements and progress.
- iSimangaliso Wetland Park, formerley known as the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. At a later date to be included into the Greater Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area.
- Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area includes Tembe Elephant Park (KwaZulu-Natal); Maputo Elephant Reserve (Mozambique) and Lubombo Conservancy (Swaziland) . At a later date to be included into the Greater Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area.
- Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area includes Golden Gate Highlands National Park, QwaQwa National Park and Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve (Free State); uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park and Royal Natal National Park (KwaZulu-Natal) and Sehlabathebe National Park (Lesotho)
- Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area Formerley known as the Limpopo-Shashe Transfrontier Conservation Area includes The Mapungubwe World Heritage Site (Limpopo) later known as The Mapungubwe National Park (Limpopo); Northern Tuli Game Reserve (see also: Tuli Block) (Botswana); Tuli Circle Safari Area (see also: Thuli Parks and Wildlife Land (Zimbabwe).
- Nsubane Pongola Transfrontier Conservation Area, Is a joint venture between South Africa and Swaziland. At a later date to be included into the Greater Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area.
- Songimvelo-Malolotja Transfrontier Conservation Area, Is a joint venture between South Africa and Swaziland. At a later date to be included into the Greater Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area.
