It is overseen by the Toronto District School Board. The school is home to the gifted program in Etobicoke. Construction of the school started about May 27, 1966, but by the Fall of 1966 it was still not ready to accept students. All Martingrove students were bused to Burnamthorpe C.I. for the Fall Term where they shared the school in a "split-shift" with the regular Burnamthorpe students. The Martingrove students had the afternoon shift, the Burnamthorpe students had the morning shift. This continued until after the Christmas break. Martingrove's architecture is typical of many institutional buildings of the period; specifically, a distinct lack of windows. The school celebrated its 40th anniversary in June 2006.
Martingrove's school colours are brown, white and orange and its mascot is a bear. The school's motto is Lumen in vobis est (The Light is Within You). Martingrove is home to the Martingrove Model United Nations, an annual Model UN event that attracts over 200 delegates from multiple schools. Martingrove is the home of the student-run newsmagazine The Martingrove Beacon, which, since its creation in 2002, has won 15 Toronto Star High School Newspaper awards.
Martingrove has a very vibrant student body, with students encouraged to join clubs and attend "Leadership Camps", after all, "what you get out of high school is what you put into it." There is an emphasis on academics at Martingrove, as well as a love for sports, drama, music and other arts.
