Le Collège français is a French-language high school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

General information

Le Collège français is part of Conseil scolaire Viamonde and as of September 2009^[update] had 283 students enrolled.^[2] It is located in downtown Toronto near the intersection of Carlton Street and Jarvis Street, near the TTC College subway station. Around 80% of the school's students commute by public transit.

The school has offered the IB program since January 1992, the only^[where?] public French high school that offers this diploma. It has a graduation rate of approximately 96%.^{[citation needed]} The school attracts students from all regions of the world, especially countries in the Francophonie. However, the majority of students are from upper middle class families in Toronto, both francophone and anglophone.^{[citation needed]} In the Fraser Institute 2011 ranking of Ontario secondary schools, it placed 419 of 727 schools.^[3]

History

Le Collège français was founded in 1979 within Monarch Park High School as the first French language "module" at the secondary level in Toronto. It was the second French public secondary school established in Toronto (the first was École secondaire Étienne-Brûlé). In 1981, it moved to Jarvis Collegiate Institute, became a separate entity in 1989, and adopted the name Le Collège français à Jarvis in 1992. In September 1997, the school moved into its present building on Carlton Street at Jarvis Street, and became Le Collège français; the building previously had been part of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Toronto headquarters until they were moved to their current location at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in 1993.

Sports

Sports are a large part of the school. Those played include: soccer, volleyball, competitive swimming, hockey and basketball. The teams are named Phénix (Phoenix). College Francais is known especially for its soccer program, the Junior and Senior boys Teams have been among the top teams in the Toronto TDSAA South Division for many years. The Junior boys went as far as the regional championships in 2005, defeating Danforth Tech and powerhouse East York; and the semi finals in 2006, with victories over Humberside and Northern. In 2006, Le College Francais won its first provincial championship at its first ever appearance in the OFSAA "A" soccer championships. Le College Francais also has several Francophone championships for soccer under its belt, including Coupe Canora 1997,1998, Franco 2004 and 2008. Le College Francais then hosted Franco 2009, and finished in first place among schools of similar size, and won again in 2010 to complete a three-peat at the tournament. In 2011, the team was again crowned Franco Champions, and extended its championship run to four consecutive victories in four years, cementing its reputation as a true dynasty in the French soccer community.
