Cardinal Newman Catholic High School was founded in 1973 when the St. Augustine's Seminary decided to utilize extra classroom space as a result of its own declining student enrollment. The school was named after John Henry Newman, a 19th century English convert to Catholicism and prolific author who is currently in the process of beatification. Located on a magnificent 18 hectare campus, Cardinal Newman Catholic School overlooks a broad vista that contains both the Scarborough Bluffs and Lake Ontario.

History

Unlike traditional Catholic schools founded by religious orders, Cardinal Newman opened in the fall of 1973 entirely staffed by lay Catholic teachers. Many of our teachers have since gone on to found, to teach and to administer similar schools in the system. Newman was one of two high schools in the system to pilot an integration program for students with special needs. It was among the first schools within the Toronto Catholic District School Board to introduce programs ranging from peer counseling and mediation to electronic keyboarding and communications technology. The school was profiled in a video produced by the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association in the 1990s for its exemplary work in developing programs which integrate Catholic values and teachings into the curriculum. Cardinal Newman continues to provide a caring educational, social and spiritual environment for its students.

General Overview

Cardinal Newman is a co-educational school, semestered in all grades. The courses are offered at levels of difficulty appropriate to each student. Exceptional and gifted programs enable students to heed the call of individual talent. Within this context, Cardinal Newman confidently seeks to make a difference in the life of every student.

Every year over sixty teams, clubs and special events demonstrate flourishing school spirit. Many events include sacraments, liturgies and charitable works, testifying to Catholic Christian values. The net result is a school culture often described as an “extended family”; more often, it is described as a “community”.
