Originally the school site was part of the Stanford Estate and in the 1870s it was leased out to Edward King who used the site as a market garden where he supplied fresh fruit and vegetables to the local Brighton market. The nuns of the Sacred Heart order then got permission to set up their
convent and school on the site. The site suited their needs perfectly as it was out of the way of the hustle and bustle of the city.Building work started around 1870, and the convent was opened in around 1872. The nuns were responsible for the landscaping of the site and the planting of the trees that still adorn the school grounds today.
The nuns eventually left Hove in 1966 as Brighton was becoming too 'racy'. The site was then acquired by the Diocese and the De La Salle Brothers took over the running of the school until they left in 1971.
Bishop David Cashman (whom one of the buildings is named after) was the motivation behind the establishment of the first Catholic Comprehensive School in
Sussex .There is now a grave yard behind the school where the children are put after the fights.
Buildings
There are many different buildings on the site such as the
Humanities building: St Mary's, the Science block: Lutwyche, the main building: Cashman and the Sixth Form building: Newman. The newest building is The Sacre Coeur Learing Centre, which was built in 2005.Notable alumni
