Racial segregation

During the 1980’s controversy erupted when Georges Vanier Secondary School was targeted by the North York Board of Education to become a “black-only” school. The school never did officially become a “black-only” school due to pressure from parents, students and local advocacy groups. [http://www.torontosun.com/News/Columnists/MacDonald_Moira/2005/09/19/1223082.html] In 2005, controversy erupted again when the Toronto District School Board's Equity Officer, Lloyd McKell, who is black himself, spoke in favour of “Black-only schools”. The proposal brought about a media backlash; the School Board claimed to have no plans to act on this proposal, however this has been proven incorrect as this very same school board is now taking a lead role in implementing this proposal [http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20071107.SCHOOL07/TPStory/TPNational/Ontario/] . As of the year 2007 the Toronto District School Board is currently promoting “black-focused” schools [http://www.thestar.com/News/Ontario/article/274299]
