The Peoples Christian Academy (PCA) (founded in 1971) is an independent, private, Christian elementary and secondary school in Toronto, Canada.

History

In 1971, The Peoples Church, Toronto, Canada under the leadership of Paul B. Smith, Senior Pastor, established an educational ministry known as The Peoples Christian Schools. Under this umbrella, two divisions became known as The Oswald J. Smith Elementary School (OJSES) and The Paul B. Smith Academy (PBSA) (the High School). Oswald J. Smith (Nov 8, 1889 – Jan 25, 1986) was a world renowned author, poet, hymn writer, preacher, editor but most notably a missionary statesman. He founded The Peoples Church in 1928 and is well beloved for his passion for souls and his dependence upon God. The official biography of Dr. Oswald J. Smith is “Fire in His Bones” by Lois Neely. Paul B. Smith was the son of Oswald J. Smith, and Senior Pastor of The Peoples Church from 1959 – 1994. In 1995, the two divisions of The Peoples Christian Schools were integrated as Peoples Christian Academy (PCA) under the umbrella of Peoples Ministries Inc. (PMI). PMI consists of The Peoples Church, Global Outreach, Living Truth and Peoples Christian Academy.

PCA is housed in the facility of The Peoples Church. The Elementary division, at the west side of the complex, contains classrooms, a gymnasium and a computer lab. At the east side of the building is the High School wing. The High School has a large gym, classrooms, a music room, science lab, art room, and 2 modern computer laboratories. Parking is available for senior students.

Auditorium

The two wings are separated by The Peoples Church facilities which include offices, as well as an 1800 seat auditorium. This well-equipped auditorium is used by the school for Chapel services, music classes, major concerts, and drama productions. Its also has its high school and elementary chapel there.

eparation

October 2007 ushered in news of the Peoples Church's decision to sever all ties with the Peoples Christian Academy. In a letter to the church, Brian Relph, wrote that television equipment were being housed off site because of the presence of the school. The letter went on to say that as of the end of the current school year, the school would have to either fold or find a new home.

The Board of Directors of Peoples Ministries Inc. gave notice to PCA that as of the end of June 2008, PCA will no longer be housed at 374 Sheppard Avenue East nor belong under the ownership and direction of PMI.

The PMI Board of Directors met during the week of October 10 to discuss the feedback from PCA parents, students, staff, alumni and other PCA stakeholders since the decision had communicated and developed a response. During this meeting, it became evident that Brian Relph and the board of PMI were lying. In light of this, the school decided that it would be best to distance itself from PMI. The following decision has been made regarding Peoples Christian Academy: The PMI Board of Directors has extended the timeframe for relocation. This would allow PCA to remain at its current location at 374 Sheppard Ave until July 2009, if necessary. The new corporation and its Board of Directors would have ongoing responsibility for PCA.

A meeting was called to address this decision. The meeting surfaced a host of inconsistencies. The most startling inconsistency occurred when Brian Relph, the chairman of the board for the Peoples Church stated that the decision was made only following through on a decision that was started by the previous chairman of the board, Bill Whyte, who revealed that his board never made such a decision. It this point it had become clear that the Peoples Church and its board had lost sense of its credibility and had created this decision as part of their own agenda.

Further investigation had revealed that the Peoples Church had sold right of first and second refusal for the sale of the current property. The Peoples Church property has been assessed at over $35 million. In recent years, the price of the property has gone up due to its prime location on the newly built Sheppard subway line, as well as the continued redevelopment of the Willowdale area.
