York School (Toronto)

The York School (TYS) is an independent coeducational JK to grade 12 school. Located in the heart of Toronto, The York School was founded in 1965 and is the first school in Canada accredited to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) from junior kindergarten to university entrance. The York School's motto is Experientia Docet or Experience Teaches.

The School

The school has two campuses. The junior and senior kindergartens are in the north campus, near Yonge Street. Grades 1-12 are in the main campus, on Yonge street, in the Summerhill district. The school also offers a variety of outdoor programs and excursions at Camp Oochigeas in Muskoka.

As of 2008, annual tuition is $20,500 for grades 1-12 and $17,100 for junior and senior kindergarten; there is also a $4,000 one time fee for registration.

Laptops are used in grades 7-12. The School mandates owning a school selected laptop for all Upper School students.

History

The York School has a somewhat unusual history. In 1965, Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots established the school as a nursery school. In 1978, a toddler program and an elementary school were started.
