Route description
MD 953 begins at an intersection with MD 193 (Enterprise Road) a short distance north of MD 193's underpass of U.S. Route 50.[2] The state highway heads west as a two-lane road, crossing Lottsford Branch, before turning north.[1][2] MD 953 temporarily gains an extra lane in both directions between Atwell Avenue and the intersection with MD 450.[2] The state highway continues north across the remains of the Glenn Dale Hospital and crosses the Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Trail.[1][2] Shortly after passing Daisy Lane and Prospect Hill Road, which connect MD 953 with MD 193, MD 953 reaches its northern terminus at a dead end adjacent to the Amtrak Northeast Corridor.[2]
History
MD 953 north of MD 450 was originally constructed as MD 199 in the 1920s. The MD 199 designation was removed from the highway in the 1950s and MD 193 was extended south along the highway to MD 953's present southern terminus in the 1960s. When Glenn Dale Boulevard was completed in 1986, MD 193 was moved to the new highway and the grade crossing of the Amtrak Northeast Corridor on old MD 193 was removed; part of the old alignment north of the railroad tracks is MD 953A. MD 953 was assigned to Glenn Dale Road shortly thereafter.
