It is located in Census Division 17. The Town of Manning serves as its municipal seat.
The municipality recently changed its name from the Municipal District (M.D.) of Northern Lights No. 22 to the County of Northern Lights. The Province of Alberta officially approved the name change on February 3, 2010.[3]
On April 1, 1995, the M.D. of Northern Lights No. 22 was formed through the incorporation of the former Improvement District No. 22 as a municipal district.

Demographics
In 2006, the County of Northern Lights had a population of 3,772 living in 1,475 dwellings, a 10.6% decrease from 2001. The municipal district has a land area of 20,745.45 km2 (8,009.86 sq mi) and a population density of 0.2 /km2 (0.52 /sq mi).[2]
In 2001, the municipal district had a population of 4,217 in 1,609 dwellings, a 5.5% decrease from 1996. On a surface of 20,743.26 km² it had a density of 0.2 inhabitants/km².[4]
