Trivia
- In the Parade of Nations, contestants introduced themselves in alphabetical order, in which each candidate rapidly recites her name and country, without being introduced individually by Bob Barker. However, the alphabetical order was disrupted. Miss Bolivia introduced herself before Miss Bermuda,British Virgin Islands before Brazil, Cayman Islands introduce before Canada, England before Ecuador, Hong Kong before Honduras, India before Iceland, and more. When Miss Korea (to the left) had entered the stage, she let Miss Japan (to the right) introduce first. This changed back the introduction order. However the camera only showed Miss Korea and Miss Japan was not shown (her voice was only heard). Previously in the 1970s, Bob Barker would announce the country of each contestant in national costume before she stepped forward.
- During the preliminary swimsuit competition, only Miss USA got a score higher than 8.00.
- Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos competed in Miss Universe for the first time. Cayman Islands won the award for Miss Amity.
- Belgium, Cayman Islands, Denmark, Guatemala, Honduras, Norway, Papua New Guinea and Wales competed in Miss World 1980 in London four months later. Wales, Kim Ashfield crowned as Miss United Kingdom and then placed as 4th runner-up in Miss World.
- Tahiti, who was semi-finalist in Miss Universe, competed in Miss World 1979, along with Ireland and Paraguay.
- Venezuela, Maye Brandt, who did not make the semi-finals, committed suicide in 1982. Twenty-four years later, Philippines, Maria Rosario Silayan, who placed as 3rd runner-up, died of colon cancer.
