Thadwal (also spelt Dhadwal,Dhudwal) is a gotra or clan of Jats, found in the states of Punjab and Himachal pradesh in India. They are part of the Jatt Sikh community.

History and origin

Many members of this gotra trace their roots back to the village of Lakhpur in the state of Punjab, North west India. The two names are identical when written in Gurmukhi script, the spelling variation came about when members of the Clan emigrated to the United Kingdom. As such, Dhadwal's and Thadwal's are members of the same Clan.

Like many Jat clans, Thadwal's (or Dhadwal's) are considered to be descendants of a long line of warriors.

However , there are also another set of Dhadwals who belong to Dogra Rajput clan of Punjab and have been living in certain area near Himachal Pradesh and Jammu border. These rajputs speak Punjabi and have served in Indian Army for generations.

The "jatt" Dhadwals are all descended from a common ancestor who moved to Punjab from the Himachal Pradesh and Jammu border area and took a "jatt" wife by the name of Maa Lakhi in the late 16th century, the village of Lakhpur is supposedely land gifted to the couple by Maa Lakhi's father. The Jatt Dhadwal Jathera is in Lakhpur.

Many Rajput Dhadwals reside in village Bhanowal, Hoshiarpur.[1] Rajput Dhadwals belong to the ancient ruling family of Datarpur and takes its name from Dada in Kangra on the Hoshiarpur border. The Ranas of Bit Manaswal or tableland of the Hoshiarpur Shivaliks were Dhadwal Rajputs.

The Rajput Dhadwals are also found in the neighbourhood of Datarpur, the seat of their former sovereignty. They can further be found on the south west of the Shivaliks in the Hoshiarpur district of Panjab, Kangra, Hamirpur and Una districts of Himachal Pradesh near Dholbaha and Janauri or Janakpuri, its ancient name, which is still used. Janak was an ancient Surajbansi ruler.[2]

The Rajput Dhadwals are a branch of the Katoch and do not intermarry the with them, or with the Gulerias or Sibayas on the ground of common decent. They have an interesting local history which describes how they wrested the tract round Datarpur from a Chang rani.[3]

The Rajput Dhadwals have several als or families, whose name are derived from their settlements, such as Janaurach, Dholbahia, Datarpuria, Fatehpuria, Bhanowalia, Khangwarch, Naruria, Rampuria etc. Datarpur is their chief village, but they have no system of chhats and makans.[4]
