- Bains (Jat)
Bains is gotra of Jats and in some cases claim to be
Rajput found in Punjab,India and Punjab,Pakistan . Today there are numerous villages with the name Bains in both Indian and Pakistani Punjab. Bains is one of the surnames mentioned in the epic Heer written by Waris Shah. According to Heornle and Cunningham,Harshavardhana belonged to this clan. He is connected withShrimalpur which is a village on the border ofHoshiarpur andJullundhar districts in Punjab and is nowadays called Māhalpur. Even today it is inhabited by Bains clan of Jats. [Bhim Singh Dahiya : Jats the Ancient Rulers, p. 247] They are mentioned in Mahabharata along withKhatkal ,Karaskar ,Mahishaka ,Karkana andViraka . Bains is one of 36 royal clans in India along withSalar ,Dahima etc.Bhim Singh Dahiya , Jats the Ancient Rulers ( A clan study), 1980, Sterling Publishers New Delhi, p. 281 ]The Bains are also a Rajput Clan depending on what area of India they are found. The Bains are an off-shoot of the
Janjua Rajput Clan. The Jat tag which they have been linked too to the fact that they took up agriculture. This reference can be seen seen below;"Bains( a Jat Clan - Agricultural)- found in Amritsar, Montgomery, and Shahpur. In the Multan and Shujabad
tehsils of Multan, it claims to be Hujau (Janjua ) Rajputs from Sakesar whose eponym settled in Multan underFiruz Shah Tughlaq . In Saikot it also claims to be Hujau Rajput ancestry and says its founder came to the Punjab with Firoz Khan....The Wains of Amritsar are clearly identical with the BAINS." Bains ancestors have strictly ordered not to give money on lease, never take anything on credit, never abuse bains daughters, never allow girls to touch feet, respect elders and ancestors.
