Dhaliwal(Punjabi: ਧਾਲੀਵਾਲ) is a large Jatt clan found mainly in the Malwa portion of Punjab, Haryana also it's gotra in Yaduvanshi Ahirs^[2] It is considered to be an old Jatt clan with history dating back over 1000 years.^[3]

Lineage, origin and history

Dhaliwal Jats and Yaduvanshi Ahirs are descendants of a Bhatti Rajput prince and are descendants of Rawal Jaisal from Jaislmer in Rajasthan, although some sources suggest that they are from Dholpur. Their ancestors then became Jat once they married into them and began to practice Karewa. The name changed to Dhaliwal in Malwa and Dhariwal in Majha. Dhaliwal people settled in Jodhpur and Bangar of Rajasthan Ghaggar banks were inhabited by a slim section called Pachahda who were often clashing with Dandwals and Gills and some times went ahead to disturb the Chahals of Khiala village.

Once, the Pachahda attack got really intense and the Chahals went to their maternal grandfather Sidh Dhaliwal in Bangar. They came back with his hordes and met Pachahdas near Sardulgarh. The Pachahda chief Baba Dalla was slain in the ensuing battle. Baba Sidh’s army also suffered heavily and Pachahdas kept following his army. At last Baba Sidh was also slain near village Bhama. The remaining members of Sidh’s army founded Bhame Kalan, Bhamme Khurad, Ramanandi, Bajewala villages and later Dhaula and Tapa. Then they founded Nihal Singh Wala(Ransih Kalan,Dhurkot,bilaspur) , Dhaliwal Bet in Kapurthala and Dhaliwal Qadian in Jalandhar. Dhaliwal community settled in the area of Jhunir for the first time either at the end of 11th century or beginning of 12th century. There are many Dhaliwal villages around Jhunir. Dandiwals fought against them and forced them to retract towards Kangar. Dhaliwals defeated Cheemas and captured Kangar. They built a fort at Kangar and moved toward Moga, Punjab. At Dina which is 2 km north of Kangar was visited by the tenth Guru Gobind Singh ji and was were the Guruji wrote the famous zafarnama to the mughal emperor Aurengzeb.

Dhaliwal Jats are mostly Sikhs.^[4]and Dhaliwal Ahirs and Jats are Hindus.^[5]

Two Ancestors of Dhaliwals are still worshipped by some Dhaliwals even today. First among them is Baba Sidh Bhoe. A carnival (Mela) is organized every year in village of Bhammipura in Punjab in his memory. 300 years after Baba Sidh Bhoe, another Ancestor of Dhaliwal clan was born and his name was Mehar Mithe. Mehar Mithe had excellent relationship with Emperor Akbar. So much was this relationship strong that Akbar gifted 120 Pind Jagir to Mehar Mithe in the region of Kangar. Dhaliwals were powerful landlords during ancient times but their relationship with Maharaja Ranjit Singh was not good. Consequently, the Dhaliwal landlords during Maharaja Ranjit Singh's time, who were known as Dhaliwal Sardars would have the jagirs annexed by the Ranjit Singh.^{[citation needed]}
