Tiwana

Tiwana

Tiwana is a Punjabi tribe that hails from the Punjab region of Pakistan and India. Tiwanas are considered to be a Rajput and Jat clan from Aryan ancestry. Tiwanas from Punjab in India are Sikhs, while Tiwanas from Punjab in Pakistan are Muslims.

Overview

Tiwanas claim their ancestry from Raja Bhoj, a Hindu ruler who was one of the most illustrious kings of ancient India. This legendary ruler had his kingdom spread to all corners of present day India, and capital at Bhojpur, Madhya Pardesh, India.

It is believed that Tiwanas settled in the Punjab region, in search for a fertile lands after the fall of Parmar kingdom. During the Bhakti movement in the 15th century, followed Guru Nanak's {Founder of Sikhism} teachings and became Sikhs like majority of Jat clans of northern India at the time.

Those who settled in the western Punjab (now part of Pakistan) became Muslims by accepting Islam at the hands of Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Masood Ganjshakar. Commonly known as Baba Farid (ਬਾਬਾ ਫ਼ਰੀਦ), he was a 12-th century Sufi preacher and saint of Punjab.

The other theory says that Seu, Teu and Gheu were three brothers from a tribe of the Agnikula clan. It is believed that the Tiwanas are the descendants of Teu, the Ghebas of Rawalpindi are the descendants of Gheu while the Sials of Jhang are the descendants of Seu (also known as Rai Sial).

Tiwanas, like many other JAT Sikhs have been part of the western migration during the last 60 years since Indian Independence. They have found opportunities in the West and made countries such as Canada, UK and USA as their homes.
