Phogat

Phogat

Phogat or Fogat or Fageria or Powgaat is a gotra of Jats found in Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Baba Swami Dayal was the first purohit who founded this gotra in 2079. His samadhi is there in Charkhi Dadri where fair is organized twice a year. The main fair is on Janmashtami.

Prithviraj Chauhan was the last Hindu king of Delhi. He ruled from 1172 to 1192. During 1178, some 17 people of Prithviraj’s vans developed differences with him and left his state and moved to different places.

One of such person was Bilhan who was settled in village Sanwar near Charkhi Dadri in Haryana. He approached Dharanand Pawar, the Zamindar of that area. Bilhan was a brave man and wanted to marry Dharanand's daughter. The myth is that Dharanand agreed to this with the condition that Bilhan kills a lion with a blunt weapon called "Phogat". Bilhan accepted this and went to the nearby forest on his own carrying only "Phogat" as a weapon to hunt lion, he re-appeared after two days dragging a badly wounded lion along with him and dropped it at Dharanand's feet. Bilhan said he has not killed the lion as it has not done any harm to anyone. Dharanand was impressed by Bilhan's bravery and kindness he married his daughter to Bilhan. After this everyone born of Bilhan was known as "Phogat".

In the fourth generation of Bilhan was born Kanaya. Kanaya had two wives and four sons, namely-Hansa, Singha, Lagha and Rara. The four sons founded four panas (sector) in their names. These were Hansana, Singhana, Laghana and Rarana around Charkhi Dadri. This way 12 villages of Phogats developed around Charkhi Dadri. Later 7 more villages were inhabited on that land and total 19 villages formed a Khap of Phogats.

Phogat khap

Phogat Khap has 20 villages namely Dadri, Samaspur, Khatiwas, Rawaldhi, Kamod, Loharwada, Dhani Phougat, Tikan - Modi, Makdana, Makdani, Kapuri, Bharavi, Patuwas- Maharana, Jinjhar, Ghasola, Gothada, Balkara, Satokpura - Kheri, Sanjarwas Phougat,Bhalout, later some Phogats settled in village Rithal near Rohtak-Gohana road, One civil servant named Jhunda belonging to Dadri was posted to Rohtak in 1700 ad and settled there at Babra Mohlla Rohtak. Now there are 30 families of Phogats at Rohtak and called Jhundaniye. A large number of Phogats are now well established in UK and USA.

Chaudhary Rajendersingh still holds title deeds of 7 villages as his Estate. Villages Bharvi, Kapuru, Behad Samaspur, Kalyana, Sangarwas - Phogat, Setokpura were part of his Estate.

Early history

Dada Bilhan Singh came to Dadri area in 1384 AD (vikram samwat 1441). He was from Phogat clan of Sanjarwas village and married in a Rajput family of nearby Sanwad village. Rani Samakaur daughter of Chaudhary Jawaharsingh was married to Maharaja Jind.

Dadri was a lake called Dadar. One day Dada Bilhansingh came to this area and saw a cow and lion drinking water side by side. One Mahatma Swami Dayal was also there in his Ashram. Bilhansingh asked for Mahatma's blessings and advice. Mahatma advised him to Make this place his home and blessed that his family will rule this place in future.
