It is named in honor of the African-American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar.[5] Dunbar opened in 1942, and it is located on a 12 acre campus in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood. It became the first predominately black vocational high school in Chicago.

Dunbar compete in the Chicago Public League (CPL) and is a member of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).
The following teams have finished in the top four of their respective IHSA sponsored state championship tournaments.[6]
- Basketball (Boys): 3rd Place (1955–56)
- Track & Field (Boys): 4th Place (1967–68); 3rd Place (1981–82)
- Track & Field (Girls): 2nd Place (1977–78)

- Michelle Gordon is a national and international award-winning martial artist.[citation needed]
- Jennifer Hudson is an Academy Award-winning actress (Dreamgirls) and singer.[7]
- Ronnie Lester is a former NBA guard (1980–86), who was drafted in the first round of the 1980 NBA Draft. He was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers when they won the 1985 NBA Championship.[5]
- Lou Rawls was a soul, R & B, jazz, and blues, singer (You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine, Love Is a Hurtin' Thing).[5]
- Bernard Shaw is a former journalist and news anchor, perhaps best known for his work at CNN (1980–2001).[5]
