GoldTeam name Huskies Near North Career Metropolitan High School (known as Near North Career Magnet High School) was a public 4-year magnet high school located on Chicago's Near North Side. It was part of Chicago Public Schools. Its sports teams were named the Huskies.
History
Near North Career Metropolitan High School was established in mid-1977 , due to plans to demolish the then 78 year-old decaying-aged Cooley Vocational High School building (which stood at 1225 N. Sedgwick St). It served area students, most of whom were from Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing development. Near North Career Metropolitan High School opened as magnet school that offered vocational careers for the Chicago Public Schools (1979-1980) school year.
Closing
In 1995, the Chicago Housing Authority decided to demolish the housing development due to the gangs and violence it produced. Over the years as the housing development became vacant, Near North's inrollment decreased. By the end of the Chicago Public School 2000-2001 school year, Near North Career Metropolitan High School shut down. Today, the Near North Career Metropolitan High School gymnasium and field are used by Jones College Prep High School athletic teams. The Chicago Police Department (CPD) and Chicago Fire Department (CFD) use the building as a training site. In July 2010 , community activist and Chicago Teachers Union members protested that more school buildings are needed and the Near North Career Metropolitan High School building be re-open for public school purpose. Mayor Daley's school board refused to re-open the Near North Career Metropolitan High School building for public school purposes.
