Mubarakpur is a city and a municipal board in Azamgarh district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located at a distance of 13 km north-east of the district headquarters in Azamgarh.The place is famous for the manufacture of Benarasi saris, which are also very popular and exported to the World.
It was settled, in the name of Raja Mubarak, a Sufi of Manikpur Karaa, by a sheikh landholder.
Geography
Mubarakpur is located at 26°05′N 83°17′E / 26.09°N 83.29°E[1]. It has an average elevation of 69 metres (226 feet).
During 15th Century (575 Years Back) Raja Mubarak Ali Shah from Kheta Sarai Jaunpur visited the place and laid the foundation of Mubarakpur.Decidents of Raja Mubarak Ali Shah , Gholam Rabbani Farooqi,Ehtesham Ahmed Farooqi,Imtiaz Ahmed Farooqi resides at Mohalla Pura Rani Mubarakpur, however after partition Gholam Rabbani and Ehtesham Ahmed migrated to Pakistan
Earlier the town was called as Qasimabad,after a Muslim landlady Qaseema Bibi. Qasimabad was frequently invaded by kings of neighboring areas and also severely affected by frequent floods from River Tauns. But King Mubaraksha has stopped the invasions and developed the area.
Though there is no exact historical data on how Handloom weaving has been started in Mubarakpur area, but during 14th century, cotton weaving has been started in the area (As per ancient Vedic and Buddha Literature). But it came to know from Old Government Gazettes that Raja Mubaraksha's Entourage is having lot of families who were weavers by profession and they started weaving Saris and other dress material during 16th Century.
The famous writer Ibne Batuta (of late 17th Century) has written that very high quality dresses which were made in Mubarakpur had been sent to Delhi and from there they are exported to various countries.
During Sultan Muhammad Bin Tughlak's Era (14th Century) there are 4000 weavers in Mubarakpur, who used to weave Silk Saris. During his regime the Mubarakpur has become very popular and the people from neighboring areas like Amilo, Nevada Saraiyya, Rasulpur Sikri, Mustafabad have also took up weaving as profession.
With the changing times, the products of Mubarakpur have also changed from Sangi, Galta, Jamdani, and Raw cotton made products.
But in 1940's there is a great change in the area as the graph of making Silk Saris has soared to greater heights, which have received national and international fame with the active involvement of traders of Banaras.
Early 90s saw the invasion of power-looms in the adjoining regions like Mau, which is gradually reducing the handloom sector in the region.
Today Mubarakpur, is known for its Saree and the dress material.
