Nyêmo (Tibetan: སྙེ་མོ་རྫོང་; Wylie: snye mo rdzong; simplified Chinese: 尼木县; pinyin: Nímù Xiàn) is a county west of the main centre of Lhasa, Tibet. It has a population of 30,000 as of 2003 and the county has jurisdiction over 7 townships and 35 administrative villages.[1]Zhuowaqudeng Monastery is located in the county.

Geography

Nyêmo County is located in central Tibet. The Yarlung Tsangpo flows through its northern area. Nyêmo Town, the county seat, is located approximately 94 kilometres west- southwest of Lhasa and the county covers a total area of 3275 square kilometers.[1] Undulating hills and valleys with green pastures form much of the landscape, with an average elevation of 4,000 meters. It is a semi-arid plateau temperate monsoon climate zone, with four distinct seasons. Summer rainfall is concentrated and it has an annual rainfall of 324.2 millimeters and 2947.2 hours of sunshine with 100 days or so without snow.[1] Natural disasters, mainly droughts, flash floods, landslides and hail are common.

Economy

An agricultural county, Nyêmo County is known for its green pastures and production of wheat and grains. The main mineral resources are copper, molybdenum, peat, and wild animals mainly leopards, bears, lynx, deer, black-necked cranes, pheasants, Chinese caterpillar fungus, berberine, snow lion etc.[1] As of 2003 it had 4.3 million mu of cultivated land which in 2000 produced 15,251.4 tons of grain and oil.[1] In 2003 it had a GDP of 95.13 million yuan and a per capita net income of farmers and herdsmen at 1750 yuan.[1] Incense, paper, copper, electricity and food are also produced and a hydropower power plant with a capacity of 250 kilowatts, produces 257,000 kW·h annually.[1] Pulu folk handicrafts and pottery are also produced.

In 2000, the county had 189 businesses with 3,319 production employees.[1] The whole community achieved the total of 260184 million yuan in retail sales of consumer goods.[1] The China-Nepal Highway (China National Highway 318) passes through the Nyêmo County with highway links to Lhasa and Shigatse.
