Mühleberg is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Mühleberg is first mentioned in 1011-16 as Mulinberg.[2]

Geography

Mühleberg has an area of 26.3 km2 (10.2 sq mi). Of this area, 53.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 32.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 8.9% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (4.5%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[3]

It is located in a triangle between the Saane/Sarine River, Aare River and Lake Wohlen. It consists of numerous hamlets and individual farm houses.

Demographics

Mühleberg has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 2,654.[1] As of 2007, 5.6% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -5.3%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (94.7%), with French being second most common ( 1.3%) and Albanian being third ( 0.8%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 41.2% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (17%), the SPS (16.1%) and the Green Party (10.5%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 21.6% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 66.3% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 12.1%. In Mühleberg about 80.8% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Mühleberg has an unemployment rate of 1.23%. As of 2005, there were 259 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 84 businesses involved in this sector. 544 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 36 businesses in this sector. 346 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 74 businesses in this sector.[3] The historical population is given in the following table:[2]

Power plants

Mühleberg is known for its nuclear power plant, Kernkraftwerk Mühleberg. In addition the municipality has a hydroelectric power station that began operation in 1921 and has created the reservoir Lake Wohlen.
