History
Mattstetten is first mentioned in 1201 as Mahtsteten.[2]
Geography
Mattstetten has an area, as of 2009[update], of 3.8 square kilometers (1.5 sq mi). Of this area, 1.89 km2 (0.73 sq mi) or 49.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.28 km2 (0.49 sq mi) or 33.7% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.58 km2 (0.22 sq mi) or 15.3% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.04 km2 (9.9 acres) or 1.1% is either rivers or lakes.[3]
Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 1.6% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 5.0% and transportation infrastructure made up 7.4%. Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 1.3% of the area Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 44.2% is used for growing crops and 5.0% is pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[3]
The village is located in the Urtenen valley, with part on Krauchthaler Mountain.
Demographics
Mattstetten has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 580.[1] As of 2007[update], 2.6% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 1.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (97.1%), with French being second most common ( 0.7%) and Dutch being third ( 0.5%).
In the election the most popular party was the SVP which received 36.4% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (20.9%), the SPS (12.8%) and the local small left-wing parties (10%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 25.9% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 63% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 11.1%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Mattstetten about 88.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Mattstetten has an unemployment rate of 0.5%. As of 2005[update], there were 32 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 11 businesses involved in this sector. 11 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 3 businesses in this sector. 104 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 10 businesses in this sector.[4]
