Oberdiessbach is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Oberdiessbach is first mentioned in 1218 as Tiecebac. Until 1870 it was known as Diessbach.[2]

Geography

On 1 January 2010 the municipality of Aeschlen merged into Oberdiessbach.[3]

Oberdiessbach has an area of 8.2 km2 (3.2 sq mi). Of this area, 45.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while 41.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 12.9% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.2%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[4] Aeschlen had an area of 4.9 km2 (1.9 sq mi). Of this area, 60.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 35.9% is forested. The rest of the land, (3.9%) is settled.[4] The total area of the new municipality is 13.1 km2 (5.1 sq mi).

The municipality is located in the Kiesental (Kiesen Valley) between Kurzenberg, Falkenfluh and Hube. It includes the village of Oberdiessbach and the communities of Glasholz and Hauben and since January 2010, Aeschlen.

Demographics

Oberdiessbach has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 3,115.[1] As of 2007, 6.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 3.2%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (95.2%), with Serbo-Croatian being second most common ( 1.0%) and French being third ( 0.9%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 32.9% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (18.9%), the SPS (15.8%) and the Green Party (10.9%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 26.2% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 57.2% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 16.6%. In Oberdiessbach about 78% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Oberdiessbach has an unemployment rate of 1.25%. As of 2005, there were 101 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 33 businesses involved in this sector. 820 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 39 businesses in this sector. 625 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 87 businesses in this sector.[4] The historical population is given in the following table:[2]
