History
Niederhünigen is first mentioned in 1148 as Huningen inferior.[3]
Geography
Niederhünigen has an area, as of 2009[update], of 5.41 square kilometers (2.09 sq mi). Of this area, 2.77 km2 (1.07 sq mi) or 51.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 2.28 km2 (0.88 sq mi) or 42.1% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.33 km2 (0.13 sq mi) or 6.1% is settled (buildings or roads).[4]
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 4.1% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.8%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 28.3% is used for growing crops and 20.7% is pastures, while 2.2% is used for orchards or vine crops.[4]
The municipality is located on the Kurzenberg and includes the village of Niederhünigen, the scattered settlement of Holz and part of the Kiesental (Kiesen Valley).
Demographics
Niederhünigen has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 646.[1] As of 2007[update], 4.1% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 6.4%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (95.9%), with Albanian being second most common ( 2.1%) and French being third ( 0.5%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 38.2% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (17.3%), the Green Party (11.5%) and the local small left-wing parties (10.3%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 30.5% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 58.6% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 10.9%. In Niederhünigen about 81.2% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Niederhünigen has an unemployment rate of 1.14%. As of 2005[update], there were 53 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 21 businesses involved in this sector. 34 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 8 businesses in this sector. 18 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 5 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
