History
Niedermuhlern is first mentioned in 1241 as Muolerrun.[2]
Geography
Niedermuhlern has an area, as of 2009[update], of 7.25 square kilometers (2.80 sq mi). Of this area, 5.46 km2 (2.11 sq mi) or 75.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.3 km2 (0.50 sq mi) or 17.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.44 km2 (0.17 sq mi) or 6.1% is settled (buildings or roads).[3]
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.6% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.8%. Out of the forested land, 14.8% of the total land area is heavily forested and 3.2% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 40.6% is used for growing crops and 33.8% is pastures.[3]
The municipality is located on a plateau of Längenberg mountain. It includes the village of Niedermuhlern, the hamlets of Ober- and Niederblacken, Bachmühle, Fallenbach and individual houses.
Demographics
Niedermuhlern has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 464.[1] As of 2007[update], 1.1% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 7.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (99.6%), with French being second most common ( 0.2%) and Spanish being third ( 0.2%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 47.5% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (17%), the FDP (12%) and the local small left-wing parties (10.3%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 27.5% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 56% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 16.4%. In Niedermuhlern about 72.6% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Niedermuhlern has an unemployment rate of 1.1%. As of 2005[update], there were 122 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 39 businesses involved in this sector. 14 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 5 businesses in this sector. 54 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 8 businesses in this sector.[4] The historical population is given in the following table:[2]
