Geography
Mühlethurnen has an area of 2.9 km2 (1.1 sq mi). Of this area, 74.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 6.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 18.2% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.7%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[3]
It is located in the Gürbetal (Gürbe valley) on the slope of Längenberg mountain. The municipality includes the village of Mühlethurnen, the hamlets of Mühlebach and Pontel-Freudberg and several isolated houses.
Demographics
Mühlethurnen has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 1,359.[1] As of 2007[update], 2.8% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -0.2%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (96.7%), with French being second most common ( 0.8%) and English being third ( 0.3%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 29.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (20.8%), the Green Party (16.9%) and the FDP (12.8%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 28.6% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 59% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 12.4%. In Mühlethurnen about 82.2% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Mühlethurnen has an unemployment rate of 0.87%. As of 2005[update], there were 41 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 16 businesses involved in this sector. 92 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 17 businesses in this sector. 98 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 24 businesses in this sector.[3] The historical population is given in the following table:[4]
