It runs from Victoria Harbour, Docklands to North Balwyn via Collins Street, Spring Street, Wellington Parade and Bridge Road. Like most tram routes in Melbourne, it falls within Metcard ticketing Zone 1, and also has a section in the CitySaver zone.
On Weekdays, it is serviced mainly by A class trams and a few C class trams. On Weekends, all trams rostered are C class trams.
The Public Transport Users Association has been lobbying for an extension of route 48 to Doncaster Shopping Centre.[1][2]
Previously route 48 ran via Flinders Street, with the Collins Street route becoming effective on 20 September 2009.
