It is in the west-central part of state and to the east of the municipality of Mérida, the state capital, and is a part of the Mérida metropolitan area.
As of the 2005 census the city of Kanasin, which is also the municipal seat had a population of 50,357 inhabitants[3] (the second-largest[3] community in the state of Yucatán), while the municipality had a population of 51,774.[3] The third and forth largest communities in Yucatán are Vallaodolid and Tizimin, with populations of 45,868 and 44,151 respectively.[3]
The municipality has an area of 72.81 km2 (28 sq mi).[1]
