Tizimín is a
city and its surrounding municipality of the same name, located in the north-east of theMexican state ofYucatán . The city is located at 21.13° North, 88.15° West, about 160 km east ofMérida, Yucatán , 200 km west ofCancún, Quintana Roo , and 42 km south ofRío Lagartos , the city's traditionalsea port on theGulf of Mexico . As of the 2008 census, the population of the city of Tizimín was 70, 000 inhabitants, the second-largest city in the state in population. It is the municipal seat of Tizimín municipality. The municipality's population was 69,553. The municipality has an area of 4,132.37 km² (1,595.52 sq mi) and includes numerous outlying smaller communities, the largest of which arePopolnáh ,Dzonot Carretero , andChan Cenote .The word "Tizimin" means "
tapir " in theMaya language . With theSpanish conquest of Yucatán , Tizimín was established as a Spanish colonial town in1544 .Tizimín is known for its festival in honor of the
Three Wise Men in late December and early January.References
