Lilly Broadcasting, L.L.C. is a privately owned American broadcasting company owned and operated by the father-and-son team of George Lilly (father) and Brian Lilly (son).
Lilly Broadcasting is the last remaining vestige of the Montecito Broadcast Group, LLC, which was an American holding company that operated television stations with most of its operations centered largely west of the Mississippi River. The company was founded in 1984 as SJL Broadcast Management, renaming itself in 1996 as SJL Communications and in 2000 as SJL Broadcasting (coinciding with their purchase of Gateway Communications). The company was reincorporated in October 2005 when SJL partnered with investment firm Blackstone Group, the owner of SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment to purchase four stations from Emmis Communications. SJL is based in Montecito, California and is headed by George Lilly who was the head of the original consortium that formed the original SJL group. Lilly Broadcasting, founded in 2000 under the control of Brian Lilly, is listed as being headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts.
On July 24, 2007, Montecito announced the sale of all of its stations (KHON, KOIN, KSNW and KSNT) to New Vision Television, ending the partnership between SJL and The Blackstone Group. [1] The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted approval of this sale in late-October of that year, and ownership was officially transferred on November 1. As of December 22, 2010, all of the former Montecito stations except for low-power KOIN repeater KBNZ-LP in Bend, Oregon (which has since flash-cut to digital as KBNZ-LD) remain under the ownership of New Vision.
On March 1, 2009, the last station formally owned by SJL, WICU, transferred its copyrights to Lilly Broadcasting when it merged its news operations with crosstown sister station WSEE-TV. Though SJL still technically exists (and still ostensibly owns WICU), its visible operations have now been subsumed by Lilly Broadcasting.
