It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. The constituency has always been a safe Labour seat. The current MP is Tony Lloyd who was first elected in 1997.

The electoral wards used in the modified Central seat are:
Moston, Ancoats and Clayton, Ardwick, Bradford, City Centre, Hulme, Moss Side, Miles Platting and Newton Heath and Whalley Range.
Unemployment
In 2009, during the depth of the current recession, it was reported that Manchester Central has the second highest unemployment rate in Britain at 15%. Only Ladywood in Birmingham (20%) has a higher unemployment rate. [1]
