A mostly Labour-inclined seat,based around the East
Lancashire town ofAccrington . It also includes Clayton Le Moors, Great Harwood, Haslingden, Oswaldtwistle and Rishton. There is much terraced, owner-occupied housing here and surrounding villages that turned the constituency Tory in1983 (by only 21 votes) and1987 ; Labour won it back in1992 and have held on fairly safely since.Boundary review
Following its review of parliamentary representation in
Lancashire , theBoundary Commission for England made minor alterations to the existingHyndburn constituency. Two wards fromRossendale district have been added to the constituency. The Commission rejected a proposal to rename the constituency "Hyndburn and Haslingden", following the Assistant Commissioner's view that;::"It is obviously right that constituency names should as far as possible reflect the geography and character of the constituency but equally they should be as succinct as reasonably possible" [http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pbc/review_areas/downloads/Lancs_%20ACR.doc (Commissioners Report, link attached 16 Jan 2006)]
The Rossendale wards of Greenfield and Worsley have been added to the entire district of Hyndburn.
