It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.
Makerfield is, and has historically been, one of the safest Labour seats in the country. With its predecessor constituencies, it has been held by Labour since the Parliamentary Labour Party was formed in 1906. [1]

Boundaries
Makerfield consists of the western and central section of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester. It comprises the wards to the south and to the west of Wigan and to the north of Leigh.
Boundary review
Following their review of parliamentary representation in Greater Manchester, the Boundary Commission for England has recommended alterations to the existing constituencies in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan area. The electoral wards used in the altered Makerfield constituency from 2010 are:
- Abram, Ashton in Makerfield, Bryn, Hindley, Hindley Green, Orrell, Winstanley, and Worsley Mesnes.
These changes move the Ince-in-Makerfield ward to the Wigan constituency.
