Entity = Greater Manchester
Type = Borough
County = Greater Manchester
Year =1832 ,1983
MP =Ann Coffey
Party = Labour
EP = North West EnglandStockport is a
borough constituency represented in the House of Commons of theParliament of the United Kingdom . It elects oneMember of Parliament (MP) by thefirst past the post system of election.Boundaries
The constituency covers the Brinnington, Cale Green, Davenport, Edgeley, Heaton Mersey, Heaton Moor and Manor wards of the
Metropolitan Borough of Stockport . Brinnington ward had been in Denton & Reddish from 1983-1997. It was transferred into the Stockport seat at that election.Politically, Edgeley, Davenport and (especially) Brinnington are good Labour areas; the Tories fight back in the Heatons, and the Lib Dems have local councillors now in Cale Green and Manor. Labour held the seat fairly safely in 2005, but it still has the potential to become a three-way-marginal in the next election if local voting patterns continue.
History
Stockport was created as a two-member constituency by the
Reform Act 1832 . It survived as such until1950 , when it was partitioned into Stockport North and Stockport South. A single Stockport seat was created in1983 , returning one member, with the remainder of the ex-county borough forming part of the new Denton & Reddish seat.Members of Parliament
