Warrington North is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

Boundaries

The constituency is one of two covering the unitary authority of Warrington, Cheshire, the other being Warrington South. It covers the northern and eastern parts of the town, including the Birchwood, Orford, Padgate and Woolston areas. It also includes the villages of Burtonwood, Culcheth and Winwick. The Southern boundary (with Warrington South) is the River Mersey.

History

The constituency was created in 1983, from parts of the former Warrington and Newton constituencies. It is a safe seat for the Labour Party, with them having held it since its creation. Its first member of Parliament was Doug Hoyle, who had first won the Warrington seat in a by-election in 1981, beating Roy Jenkins, the leader of the then-new Social Democratic Party in their first election.

Hoyle stood down at the 1997 general election, and was replaced by Helen Jones, who has held the seat since then. Hoyle now sits in the House of Lords, as Lord Hoyle of Warrington.

Members of Parliament
