The constituency is one of two covering the
Metropolitan Borough of St Helens , the other being St Helens South. It includes the north of the town of St Helens, and Billinge,Earlestown ,Haydock ,Newton-le-Willows andRainford .Following a review by the
Boundary Commission for England , at the next general election the constituency will undergo subtle boundary changes, in order to match the modified ward boundaries introduced in the borough in2004 .History
The constituency was created in
1983 , primarily replacing parts of the St Helens and Newton constituencies. It is asafe seat for the Labour Party, having being held by them since its creation, first by the former Newton MP John Evans, then from1997 byDavid Watts , a former leader of St Helens council.Members of Parliament
