The British Bankers’ Association (BBA) is the trade association which represents the banks operating within the United Kingdom.
History
It was set up in 1919. In 1972 it accepted foreign banks. In 1975 responsibility for money transmission services moved to APACS, which became UKPA in 2009.
Function
One of the BBA’s key roles is to operate and maintain BBA LIBOR, the primary benchmark for short-term interest rates internationally, and one of the fundamental benchmarks for global financial markets.
Structure
The BBA’s honorary chairman is Marcus Agius, the chairman of Barclays. The BBA’s chief executive is Angela Knight CBE. It is situated halfway between the Bank of England and Liverpool Street station, off the A1211 (London Wall).
