Sarah Orne Jewett lived in the home, owned by her family since 1819, for much of her life. She was a prolific author. Her work is of interest to historians for its perspective on the ways of life in rural Maine in the late 19th century and as early women's literature.
The house was declared a National Historic Landmark on July 17, 1991.[2][3]
Historic New England owns and operates the house as a historic house museum that is open to the public on weekends from June through October.
