Athletics
Cross Country The Northwest Cross Country program has been historically strong since its inception in 1968. The entire team has qualified for state 23 times (1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 2000). The team has won five state trophies, two individual titles (John Prasuhn 1972 and Don Shell 1975), and had 16 state medalists, but never a team championship in the state of Missouri.
Stan Nelson was the original coach of the boys cross country team and was instrumental in starting the girls program. He coached the team for 35 years and upon his retirement in 1999 the school's cross country invitational was renamed "The Stan Nelson Invitational." In 2002 Nelson was inducted in the Missouri Track and Cross Coaches Association (MTCCCA) Hall of Fame. One of Nelson's former runners, Ken Campbell, has been the head coach of the program since Nelson's retirement. Nelson's son, Mike, a state medal winner for Northwest, is currently the Cross Country coach at Marquette University.
Track and Field The Northwest track and field athletes have earned 62 medals at the state meet since the program began in 1955. Northwest state champions are: Gene Frohse, High Jump 1961; Mike Werner, 2-Mile Run 1974; Dave Aubry, 880-Yard Run 1976; Kevin Hitt, 2-Mile Run 1977, Dan White, 880-Yard Run 1979; Doug Hunsicker, Shane Varhol, Shawn Schwab, Clint Griffith, 2-Mile Relay 1988;
Wrestling Northwest is home to one of the best wrestling teams in the state of Missouri, with a state title in 1984. The 1984 team, coached by Les Cranmer, set Class 4A state records for most points in the state tournament, and most state medalists with 10 (both records broken by Oakville in 1998). The '84 team had two state champions, Doug Jewell and Ed Schulze, while 1985 saw Tim Miller win a state championship and also become the school's first All-American. Northwest would finally get another state champion in 2007 with Vito Krischke, now wrestling at the University of Missouri.
Northwest has also had a good history in softball, with a state title in 1986. The Lions cheer leading squad added a third state title for the school in late 2007 and first at state in early 2008. Major league baseball players who have attended Northwest High School include Brian Boehringer, and alumnus David Frisch played in the National Football League. An interesting bit of trivia is that current Northwest principal Brad Snell was voted "Most Athletic" in the 1988 graduating class, beating both Boehringer and Frisch.
