Lafayette High School, located in Wildwood, Missouri, United States is a secondary school in the Rockwood School District.

History

Lafayette High School began its existence on September 7, 1960 [ [http://www.rockwood.k12.mo.us/Lafayette/about/history.htm History ] ] in one small building located in Ellisville. [ [http://www.rockwood.k12.mo.us/crestview Crestview Middle School - Ellisville, MO ] ] With the passage of time, the student body population increased and in 1989 Lafayette moved to its current home in Wildwood. [ [http://www.rockwood.k12.mo.us/schools/high.htm Rockwood School District ] ] The old school site became Crestview Middle School. Lafayette's colors are black and white, often accented with gold.

Lafayette has a student body that numbers over two thousand students,Fact|date=September 2008 making it one of the largest high schools in St. Louis County.

Athletics

Lafayette's athletic program boys' teams include: tennis, swimming and diving, football, basketball, track and field, cross country, soccer, baseball, volleyball, golf, ice hockey, water polo (co-ed), lacrosse and wrestling. Girls' teams include: swimming and diving, basketball, track and field, cross country, soccer, softball, volleyball, golf, lacrosse, and field hockey.

Lafayette is considered a Class 5 large school according to MSHSAA, the Missouri State High School Athletics Association, and therefore competes at the district, sectional, and state levels with some of the largest high schools in Missouri. Lafayette competes at the conference level in the Suburban West Conference, along with rival Marquette High School (Chesterfield, MO), Lindbergh High School (St. Louis, MO), Fox High School (Arnold, MO), Northwest High School (Cedar Hill, MO), Kirkwood High School (Kirkwood, MO), Parkway South High School (Manchester, MO), Mehlville High School (St. Louis, MO), and Oakville High School (St. Louis, MO).

Lafayette has been voted as having one of the top athletic programs in the metro area, receiving a #3 vote in 2006, and #1 vote in 2004-05. In 2007, boys soccer, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, swimming, and volleyball all won the Suburban West Conference. The Lady Lancers took championships home in volleyball, soccer, field hockey, swimming, and lacrosse. The Lady Lancers won the state championship in swimming in 2007, marking its 5th State title in 7 years. Lafayette also has a fairly competitive dance team/pompom squad called Lafayette Escadrille. The compete at state wide competitions throughout the year, and usually place. The team also always performs at both all home basketball games and football games, as well as assemblies and other special events such as The Shootout at Scottrade Center.

Academics

It offers a large variety of AP courses, which include: AP US History, AP European History, AP Psychology, AP United States/Comparative Government, AP Calculus AB, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics B, AP Physics C (Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism), AP Economics (Micro and Macro), AP Spanish, AP French, AP German, AP Latin, AP Computer Science, AP Music Theory, and AP Art History.

Lafayette was voted as having the #1 ACT program in the state last year, as Lafayette has over 90 Bright Flight students who graduated in 2008 (31 or over on the ACT). The average ACT score from a Lafayette student is 25.4.Fact|date=September 2008

Extra-Curricular Activities

LHS has a wide and diverse group of extra-curricular activities. The largest of these are Key Club, joined by Student Council, National Honor Society, Latin Club, Spanish Club, French Club (Le Cercle Français), German Club,JROTC, Mu Alpha Theta, Film Appreciation Society, Ultimate Frisbee Club, Photography Club, C-520, OSEP, Robotics, Computer Club, Earth Club, FBLA, Scholar Quiz Bowl, Black Student Union, Speech and Debate, Diversity Alliance, FCCLA, Anime Club, and LFA. The school's marching band, the Lafayette Lancer Regiment, consistently places well, including a 2006 victory in its division in the Greater St. Louis Marching Band competition at the Edward Jones Dome. In 2007, The Lancer Regiment also placed 1st in the Blue Division at GSL. The Lancer Regiment often plays at all home football games, in the Lafayette Homecoming Parade, and hosts its own competition, Contest of Champions.

Publications

The school's student newspaper is a monthly publication known as "The Image", which has run since 1965. The school's print yearbook, known as "The Legend", is in its 47th year of publication. The print yearbook has a DVD yearbook supplement that began publication with the 2006 book. In just its first year, it received the distinction of being a National Pacemaker Finalist for Interactive Yearbook.
