The mission of Cleveland is to provide all cadets with a quality education in a highly disciplined military school environment: to foster self-esteem, self discipline, academic excellence and physical fitness. To that end, Cleveland integrates its civilian and military staff members into a cohesive educational unit focused on student achievement.
As a magnet high school created to support the voluntary desegregation program between the city and county of St. Louis, Cleveland serves a racially and economically diverse student body which is approximately 65% African American, 26% White, 3% Asian, 5% Hispanic/other and 1% Native American. Student applicants are selected through a lottery, coming from all regions of the city and county. Every parent has his/her child here by choice.
Cleveland provides a comprehensive high school curriculum supporting everything from special education to advanced placement/college credit offerings in math, science, English, and social studies.
All Cleveland students are cadets in the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) program. Uniforms are provided by the Navy and are worn five days a week. In addition to uniforms, the Navy provides all instructional and support materials required for the NJROTC program.
Since 1995, eight Cleveland graduates have accepted appointments to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD; two others accepting appointments to the United States Coast Guard Academy. Twelve additional graduates have accepted ROTC/NJROTC scholarships to public and private universities. The backgrounds of these graduates mirror the racial and economic diversity of the student body.
Cleveland provides a wide variety of varsity and junior varsity athletics to both its male and female cadets. Military extra curricular activities include Honor Guard, Color Guard, and precision drill teams and Orienteering Teams. Additional activities include cheerleaders, pom pons, debate, and art club.
The typical Cleveland Cadet is Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, Bosnian, Vietnamese, male, female, college bound, military service academy bound, enlisted for service in the armed forces, blue collar, white collar, low income, high income, middle class. "We are as diverse as our communitiy, metropolitan St. Louis. With this single commonality, we have learned to work and achieve together in Cleveland's Regiment of Cadets."

Regimental staff members are chosen by the Naval Science Instructors. The criteria are quite basic; you must have a 3.0 or above, very little tardies and absences, no behavioral problems and leadership potential.
Events and Celebration
a traditional homecoming festival (i.e. football game, parade and dance) Parades are held on Saturday morning of the weekend designated for the homecoming football game. The parade route is usually in the school's neighborhood. The Dance is held that same Saturday, in the Field House of Cleveland's Old building.
- Pass-in-Review:
An event held in the spring, usually near the end of April. The event begins with a visitation by a high ranking Navy Officer, who spends a couple days inspecting the individual platoons in the regiment. On the Friday after the Regimental Inspection, the Regiment forms up on the nearby parade ground, perform the various procedures (i.e. Report-in, Parade the Colors, Guest Speaker, Drill Teams etc.) and the ceremony commence with the regiment parading pass the review Stand of military and civilian dignitaries.

Female cadet dress in formal Dress/Gown, they also have the option of wearing the Female version of the Service Dress uniform.
Special Activities
As an NJROTC unit, cadets are offered many experiences that are only offered through the NJROTC program.
- During the spring of their freshman year, Delta cadets are offered to go to a 5-day training course in Tullahoma, TN called Mini-Boot Camp. Mini- Boot Camp puts emphasis on being a good follower to be a good leader. Cadets receive to ribbons after completion.
- During the summer between their freshman and sophomore years, cadets are offered to go to a 3 week course at Cleveland called Platoon Commander and MAA school. Here cadets are taught the fundamentals of drill and small group leadership. Most cadets that complete this course go on to be platoon commanders or Master at Arms.
- During the summer between sophomore and junior years, SELECT cadets are offered to go to the Area Nine Leadership Academy in Tullahoma, TN. This is the most prestigious and honorable course to be offered. Cadets are taught all of the essentials in being the leader. They are taught drill with swords and guide ons, military courtesy, proper procedures for military banquets, leadership skills, emphasis on physical fitness etc. Cadets that attend are the top cadets in their unit. Normally, Cleveland sends five to eight cadets. In general, NJROTC cadets that attend become the commanding and executive officers of their units. Upon completion of Leadership Academy, cadets are rewarded the silver aigulette which is the only aigulette nationally recognized by the NJROTC program.
