Parkway North High School (commonly Parkway North or North) is a coeducational public secondary school in Creve Coeur, Missouri, United States. The school is one of five high schools in the Parkway School District and enrolls 1,445 students in grades 9-12. Its mascot is the Viking. Both the building and the 36.41 acres of land it occupies were appraised in 2007 at a combined value of $32,774,500 [ [http://revenue.stlouisco.com/ias/ Real Estate Information ] ] by St. Louis County.

Demographics

According to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education the student body has fluctuated between 70 and 68 percent White and 20 to 21 percent Black with other groups comprising less than 10 percent combined. The school busses in African American and minority students from St. Louis City.

History

The first classes began at Parkway North during the 1971-72 academic year, although the North building did not open until Fall 1972. During the first year, North students attended classes at Parkway Central on a split schedule from noon to 6:00 pm. Parkway North was the first of the Parkway schools to have its own swimming pool.

Athletics

The school has track, wrestling, football, softball, baseball, water polo, swimming, field hockey, soccer team, volleyball team, golf team, lacrosse team, and a competitive marching band.

Building architecture

The school is notable in its extensive use of open classrooms, insofar that the school was originally constructed without walls separating classrooms. This was a trend in architecture in 1971 when the building was constructed. However, the infeasibility of this design was discovered ten years later, and plaster walls were inserted between classrooms, resulting in an eclectic mix of architectural styling, not to mention the logistical problems with these newly-created rooms receiving proper HVAC ventilation. The new science department contains traditional classrooms with walls, moving the school away from its original architecture.
