New Otani Co., Ltd. (株式会社ニューオータニ Kabushiki-gaisha Nyū Ōtani ) is a chain of hotels whose headquarters is in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan.[1]
The company opened on January 18, 1963.[1] The main hotel in Tokyo opened in 1964, to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics of that year. Upon its opening, the building was the tallest building in Tokyo until 1968 when the Kasumigaseki Building was completed. It is known for its revolving restaurant atop the hotel and along with the New Otani Art Museum located on its sixth floor.[citation needed] The New Otani operates 17 hotels in Japan and 2 hotels outside of Japan.[1]
A 400 year-old Japanese garden is on the hotel site, dating from the 16th century when Katō Kiyomasa, a Samurai lord, had his residences on this site.
In the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice, the Hotel New Otani Tokyo is used for the outside scenes at Osato Chemicals, and appears as the Japanese headquarters of Ernst Stavro Blofeld's organization, SPECTRE.
Due to change in ownership, the Los Angeles New Otani has ceased to operate under that name and is now the Kyoto Grand Hotel & Gardens, effective as of November 30, 2007.
