It encompasses 64.5 acres (261,000 m2), and as of the end of 2005, had 34,637 interments.

History
At the end of the American Civil War, in July 1866, 45 acres (180,000 m2) were transferred to the federal government from land owner Morton B. Howell. In 1867 another 17 acres (69,000 m2) were acquired, and another portion was purchased in 1879 from J. Watts Judson.
The original interments were transferred from veteran hospital cemeteries around the region, as well as battlefield cemeteries, such as those from the Battle of Franklin. There are over four thousand unknowns buried in Nashville National Cemetery.
Nashville National Cemetery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
The American flag is proudly flown 24 hours a day as a symbol of our diligence to ensure that the consecrated grounds of this cemetery will remain a living trust in remembrance of the men and women who are at eternal rest.

- Corporal William Franklin Lyell, Medal of Honor recipient for action during Korean War.
- Augustus Herman Pettibone, US Congressman.
- Barry A. Sadler, Vietnam War veteran, and writer of the song Ballad of the Green Berets.
- Teddy & Doyle Wilburn, brothers and country music stars.
