It was created to promote the Sociology education in Pakistan. It is also one of the oldest department with in university which was established in 1960 during the education students also get a chance to participate internship programs which help them to score a job in market after completing their education in order to serve society professionally up till now more than 25 students have already obtained Ph.D. degrees from the department.[1]

History
Department of Sociology at University of Karachi was established in 1960 by Professor Dr. S.M. Jilani who was also the founder Chairman of department, he served department since 1960 till 1966 during his time period department score lot of achievements the major reason to found this department was to enhance facilities for advanced studies and research in the field of Sociology in Pakistan to explore new and creative methods of sociology for betterment of society and introduce new generation with society, culture, environment, and develop them to be a part of difficult to live social world around them.[2]
