Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC) is located in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. It is one of the constituent colleges of the National University of Science and Technology. It is administered by the Pakistan Navy and the campus is referred to as PNS Jauhar. The student body and the faculty consist of both civilians and naval officers.

History

Pakistan Navy Engineering College was established as Officers Training Section (OTS) in 1962 as part of Pakistan Navy. In 1966 the status of OTS was upgraded to that of a college and given the name of "Pakistan Navy Engineering College" (PNEC). PNEC was affiliated with University of Karachi in the same year. In 1977, the affiliation of PNEC was transferred to NED University of Engineering and Technology. In 1995 it became a constituent college of National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Rawalpindi. The college conducts undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering disciplines - leading to the award Graduate & Postgraduate Degrees by the National University of Sciences & Technology.

The genesis of Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC) lies in the Officers Training Section (OTS) which was established in 1962 as part of PNS KARSAZ, sailor's training establishment. In 1966, the status of OTS was upgraded to that of a college and named Pakistan Navy Engineering College. The same year it got affiliated with the University of Karachi. In 1977, the affiliation of PNEC was transferred to NED University of Engineering & Technology. The college was shifted to its present location in 1982 and commissioned as PNS JAUHAR as an independent unit of Pakistan Navy. It became a constituent college of National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in November 1995.

The primary role of PN Engineering College is to produce Quality Engineers for Pakistan Navy and NUST. To achieve this, it conducts degree courses in the disciplines of Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and MS/PhD degree courses in the disciplines of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. These courses are also availed by other Defense Services and brotherly countries. Since 1987, civilian students are also being enrolled in these courses each year. Apart from BE and MS/PhD degree courses, the college also provides specialized mid career courses for PN technical officers after they have obtained competency certificate onboard PN Ships. These include Marine Engineering Systems Management Course and Weapons Engineering Systems Management Course, specially designed to meet the service requirements of the officers in their career.

The college achieved ISO 9001 certification in May 1999 as per 1994 standard. In June 2002, the college shifted to the new quality standards i.e. ISO 9001: 2000. Being the first college to gain ISO 9001:2000 certification in Asia, the college ensures streamlined education to its students, to excel in their future jobs and appointments. PNEC Engineering is also at the pinnacle of the rating by Pakistan Engineering Council, with its Electrical and Electronics department rated as the best amongst all the universities/colleges in Pakistan. Similarly, the mechanical engineering department of PNEC has been rated as the second best in the country.

tudent Life

ocieties

Although student politics are not allowed on campus, non-political societies are allowed and encouraged. Several student bodies have been spawned during PNEC's history.

Student members of the IEEE, formed the IEEE PNEC chapter in 2005. The aim was to bring students in touch with global advancements in the Electrical Engineering field, and encourage them to delve deeper into it. The official [http://ewh.ieee.org/sb/karachi/pnec/index.htm website] for IEEE PNEC went live on 18th April, 2007 [http://ewh.ieee.org/sb/karachi/pnec/newsarchive.htm IEEE PNEC ] chapter news archive] . Members of IEEE PNEC have been actively participating in local and national level competitions .

The IT Club focuses on Computer Engineering topics. PNEC also has a Dramatics Society, the members of which enact plays and sketches, usually on the annual Guest Night.

As of March 2008, a new society called Avant Garde was established by two semester four students, Ahmad Hayat Khan and Rehan Rafi. It consists of four sub-societies namely: Thinkers' Forum, A-Clan, Cyber Guitar and NUST Sports. The Thinkers' Forum had the honor of conducting the first event of Avant Garde on the 9th of May 2008: An essay writing competition in English on the topic "Courage is not to die but to live".

Guest Night

Each year, the university holds a "Guest Night". Previous Guest Nights have featured concerts where prominent Pakistani bands have been invited, and plays and sketches enacted by the Dramatics Society. Although these are meant to be informal affairs, students are required to adhere to a dress code, in accordance with Naval traditions.

Ragging Tradition

A tradition among the students is to rag on the fresh batch. Each year many of the senior students subject the incoming class to ragging sessions. The seniors involved call it light-hearted play, but the administration frowns upon the practice.
