Karachi along theArabian Sea and theIndus River delta. The town and the adjacentPort Qasim are named afterMuhammad bin Qasim who conquered large parts ofPakistan in theeighth century CE. Bin Qasim is bordered byGadap Town to the north,Thatta District and theIndus River to the east, theArabian Sea to the south and theMalir River and the towns of Landhi, Malir, andKorangi Cantonment to the west. The town had a population of about 315,000 at the 1998 census, of which 97% are Muslim and include several ethnic groups - Muhajirs,Punjabis , Sindhis,Kashmir is,Seraikis , Pakhtuns,Baloch s,Memon s,Bohra s andIsmaili s.History
The federal government introduced local government reforms in the year
2000 , which eliminated the previous third tier of government (administrative divisions) and raised the fourth tier (districts) to become the new third tier. Trade and industry
The port of Bin Qasim was built in the 1970s to relieve pressure on the
Port of Karachi and is today the second largest port of Pakistan. The port is surrounded by a large industrial area which includes thePakistan Steel Mills complex inGulshan-e-Hadeed and the Zulfiqarabad Oil Terminal as well as the nearby industrial estate inLandhi Town . The two neighbourhoods ofIbrahim Hyderi andRehri are focussed on the fishing industry, complemented by the nearby Korangi Fish Harbour.See also
