Lyari Town is one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi, in the province of Sindh, Pakistan. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated town. It is bordered by the towns of SITE Town to the north across the Lyari River, Jamshed and Saddar to the east, and Kiamari to the west across the main harbour of Karachi. The population of Lyari Town was estimated to be over 600,000 at the 1998 census.

Lyari is considered one of the most dangerous places in Karachi due to ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry; certain areas of the town are literally controlled by gangs and municipal authorities have no power. Hence, the town has also been the site of many (mostly unsuccessful) police operations. The two biggest gang leaders in Lyari are Rehman Dakait and Arshad Pappu, who are the most-wanted criminals in Karachi.

Lyari is also popular as a football hotbed in Pakistan, and many of the nation's top players emerge from the area--the sport's popularity is so much in the area that crime levels dip significantly during the FIFA World Cup season.

History

The federal government introduced local government reforms in the year 2000, which eliminated the previous third tier of government (administrative divisions) and raised the fourth tier (districts) to become the new third tier. The effect in Karachi was the dissolution of the former Karachi Division and the merger of its five districts to form a new Karachi City-District with eighteen autonomous constituent towns including Lyari Town.

Union councils

The town of Lyari is subdivided into eleven union councils:cite web| url=http://125.209.91.254/cdgk/Home/Towns/LyariTown/LyariTownUnionCouncils/tabid/363/Default.aspx| title=Lyari Town Union Councils| publisher=City-District Government of Karachi| accessdate=2008-01-05]
